"As long as the orders are just, I usually do not mind a bit of direction. I agree with you, however, that freedom is important. There are many places that are not as lucky as here, and many creatures that are not blessed with free will as we are."
Lorien stopped, thinking about Chase's comment on 'World War II'. He was not familiar with that war, so it must have happened far from his home. It did give him an idea, though. "If you have so much power over death, could you not use it to prevent wars and suffering?" he asked curiously. "There are few causes more noble."

Thanatos chose to respond, "However cold and inhuman it sounds, the profession of Death is not to ensure people don't die in large amounts, it is to regulate the population so as to not have a period of intense and unbearable suffering. In simpler terms, it is population control. If we were to allow too many people on the earth, even more starvation and wars would be present." His words were cold truths that seemed rehearsed or at least explained many times.
Paleness and blankness overcame Chase's face with the job description. That was the other reason that Chase was uncomfortable with the job of Death: he never felt comfortable with signing away life. It gave him a gut-wrenching feeling that he never seemed to get over, even while he was eating a mountain of pancakes.

The blond haired youth nodded. "It seems, then, Chase, that our duties are not so different. As a Knight under the Keeper, I must kill some so that others may safely live. We all have our times to pass on, but I share your discomfort in the necessity of it." His words may have been formal, but Lorien's inflections were much less so, and he smiled sadly.

As cliched as it sounded, Chase took some solace in the paladin's words. For two people whose profession fundamentals were quite the opposite, they seemed to have similar experiences and goals. "I guess so," he replied with a somewhat angered look covering his countenance. He left the table momentarily to place his tray into the bin for it to be washed and sighed deeply as he did so. Chase gathered some happy thoughts into a mental pile and jumped into them, or at least it appeared so. "Well, now that we're off the depressing subject, what's up?" he asked as he returned to his seat at the table, very hesitant to continue the past conversation.

Lorien mimicked Chase's action, taking guidance from him. He had never been in an establishment where he had gotten free food and had not been expected to clean plates for it. It built character. The question Chase asked happened to puzzle him.
"It's hard to say," the knight replied, after thinking about it. He had a devout look on his face, hopeful and pure, and Lorien's gaze inevitably drifted upward. The ceiling stared down. "There is no doubt that Heaven exists above us, but what will it be like? It is something so beyond human thought that it must be beautiful, a perfection one cannot find on earth. To have a place of absolute harmony... well, we'll just have to wait and find out."
(I was somewhat tempted by Red vs. Blue there. Apologies. xD)

((Sorry I haven't posted. I've been a bit busy lately.))
Chase sighed as a result of Lorien's literal interpretation of his idiom. "No...it means like 'How are you?' or 'How's it going?'. It's not meant to be literal." He couldn't help but crack a smile at Lorien. It was quite the refresher from the previous conversation and so Chase felt in a much better mood than just moments before.
He put his hand on his stomach and let free a burp that momentarily shook the heavens. Thanatos looked at him with a countenance filled with a feeling of awestruck and one of being appalled. "Oh, excuse me," Chase said with a grin when he noticed the bird's reaction.

Before Lorien could answer, and apologize for not realizing his friend's meaning, Chase let out a burp that jounced the Devil from his throne. The paladin stared at him, blue eyes wide, and started laughing uncontrollably. "Do you practice that?" he asked between breaths, shaking his head. Now that they were done, perhaps they could train, or maybe make some other friends. Or train with other friends. It was all well.

"I did indeed," Chase responded as he patted on his stomach with a sense of accomplishment and a smile that stretched from ear to ear. Some would call that skill extremely awesome, but most would say that Chase had too much time on his hands to be practicing something as impractical as that.
"Now then, Master Chase...after your show of what you do in your abundant free time it is only more apparent to me that you should spend more time training and less time...burping," Thanatos said, struggling to find a suitable word for Chase's vocalized and pressurized explosion.
He sighed as the smile ran away from his face: practice. "Fine," Chase acquiesced. "Guess we should get going then," he told Lorien.

(I was thinking maybe we could include a new student in our practice, if that was possible. Just to break some new kids in. Unfortunately, it's taking longer to get them through the shipyards than I had thought. ._.)
"Where do you wish to go?" His armor was in his room, but he could train without it. Lanceblade Challisaen, on the other hand, stuck with him at all times. It was not a conscious blade, as some legends claimed existed, but it was still a very special weapon of great history. There was also the question of practicality of going unarmed anywhere, since one never knew when fell creatures could appear.

(Yeah, sure)
"Hmm...where to go..." Chase thought to himself for a moment. His hand went to his chin to create a pensive look about him, and almost gave his drifting some respect.
"There's always the--" Thanatos began, but was interrupted by a burst of insight.
"I got it!" Chase replied as he snapped his fingers in celebrate his newly gained idea, "We can go to that lighthouse thing that I heard about." When Chase says that he heard about something, it simply meant that he just so happened to be eavesdropping on some other students' conversations, as is what he likes to do. "It's called Aceetium or Ashentum or something like that," Chase continued. The real name escaped him at the time.
Thanatos, on the other hand, wasn't as happy. Being interrupted before he could turn a simple response into a forty-minute speech began to work his nerves. The raven attempted to remember the stress relief techniques that his therapist taught him before responding with: "This lighthouse better be a place suitable for you to practice your Necromancy, Master Chase."
"Yeah, sure, whatever," he said without any meaning to Thanatos. The bird was in for a banner day.
