The Right Words, the Wrong Place

[Gregario Seafarer]

Gregario Seafarer was extremely homesick. Being so tight-knit with his family for such a long time wove webs that were not easily sundered. Overhearing a conversation about this lake during breakfast, he quickly packed up some supplies in a small satchel pack, threw it over his shoulder, and left for it. Finding it much shorter a journey than he previously anticipated, he sat at the lakes edge. Memories of his home floated around, like the time when his cousin Martha almost drown in a lake much like this.

Memories like this made Gregario all that much sadder, and the fact that he had only really talked to one person (he was a shy boy, and had been spending much time reading the book Shiro had given him) brought him very close to tears. "I miss the farm." he said after a moment, and the wind seemed to pick up around him, only to die back down. "I miss my parents. I miss my horses, my cows, my room, my pig... Everything!"

"Woah! You had pigs?" came the ecstatic voice of Brandon, who had came found this place on purely serendipity. Behind him was a little House Goblin, no larger than three feet, with a pillowcase acting as universal clothes for the little creature. It's ears were quite long and elfish, as well as having large, drooping eyes and a few, single, long strands of gray hair and a sickish green skin. "Pigs are like, the coolest farm animal...ever! It could so beat a chicken in Pig," the exuberant youth said as he walked close to Greg, eventually sitting next to him. Box, the House Goblin who was with Brandon, stayed standing up next to Brandon, only barely making even with Brandon's head.

Gregario was startled, both by the fact that Brandon had snuck up on him, and that he had a house elf. Of course, he didn't know what a house elf was, and thought it looked very similar to a goblin. "Look out, it's a Goblin!" Gregario said, as he picked up his sack of food and took a few steps back. "I've no mind to let you near my food wretched little beastie!"

"Beastie? WHERE?!" Brandon said as he ran behind Greg, almost as if using the poor boy as a shield...well, he was actually. Box closely followed, with an equally scared expression on his face. They were lovers, not fighters. "Is it 'them'? Oh no! They've found us, Box!" Brandon said, shaking the little goblin violently as he did so. "Save me, stranger!" Brandon said to Greg.

"No, wait, NO!" Greg said, nearly falling and busting his teeth out trying to get away from Box. "That's the beastie! Why is it followin' ya?" Greg yelled/asked. "Who are you anyways? What is that Goblin doing following you?" He was afraid, years of superstition working against him. "Don't let it near your face, it'll eat your nose!" Again, superstition. "I can't believe you snuck up on me like that! I shouldn't have been so distracted!"

"Box is no beastie!" Brandon said, a bit insulted and miffed. "He is a refined Goblinus Casus Boxus, or a Box Goblin. These are creatures of class, of elegance, and of grace!" Brandon said, with Box currently checking the contents of the area in-between his toes in order to kill some time.

"And I am a member of the proud Salvatore family, one of the groups of legend to have helped them in their time of need, giving us dominion over them!" Brandon said, attempting to hold up Box like a trophy, but his frail arms were too weak to do anything of the sort, so instead it looked as if Box weighed hundreds of pounds.

"Whoza what now?" Greg asked confusedly. "That thing's your slave then? I mean, you "Helped" it, and then enslaved it? That's not cool." He rattled off. "And if your family is so proud, how come I ain't never heard of you guys? You'd figure news would get around about a bunch of slavers. That thing, even though it's creepy and would probably eat my nose, probably doesn't much enjoy being a minion."

He quickly picked up his pack, and made sure none of his food was pilfered whilst he was distracted. "Heck, I bet that's why you're so scrawny. You ain't never done a day of work in your life, have you? I bet that poor little guy does all the work around your house. Sure sounds slavey to me."

"Not slavery! We've got a whole contract and stuff drawn up!" Brandon said. The Sharpie Marker around his neck glowed for an instant, before in a poof of smoke came another goblin, this one with a large 'pocket' on the side of its pillow-case. It pulled out a large stack of papers that looked to be the size of a large dictionary. "Thank you," Brandon said to the little Closet Goblin as he let it poof away. "As you can see from this contract, it is more of mutual benefits. They have free will, my House Goblins could leave anytime they want," Brandon said in a matter-of-fact way.

"And I've done a hard day's work! It's not so easy pwning the Covenant on Expert, y'know!" Brandon half said half yelled.

"What did you just call me?" Greg said, suddenly very angry. "I have never sold short on a promise in my life, you good for nothing little punk!" Apparently, Greg had misheard Brandon. Pwning sounded awfully similar "Pawning" as in, to sell something, and most people knew that a covenant was a promise, in simple terms. "I'll have you know that I have never, EVER ducked out of a chore, or skipped what little schooling I got! You and your little- Goblinus Whateverus- think you're so much better than me just because you got raised in a big house with a bunch of little servants running around... Grr... Lucky we're schoolmates or I'd bust yer teeth out."

Greg was a little P'O'ed.

"I never thought that I was better than you! 'We' see everyone as equals, don't cha know!" Brandon said, a bit apologetic. "Don't you know who the Covenant is?" he asked. "Good thing he doesn't know that fighting is allowed at this school..." Brandon whispered to himself, although loud enough for anyone else to hear. Tough day for the little insane teen, I mean, he was only discussing Halo for Pete's sake!

"What'd you just say?" Gregario's hearing, although technically fine, was never great when he was angry. It was something to do with blood flow and the expansion of his brain, but he never really took the time to learn it's name. "Course I know what a covenant is, it's a promise you make when you tell someone that you ain't going to do something! You think just cause I was raised on a farm that I'm dumb? People here can be real jerks. I'm going back to the school, hopefully I don't see you there."

[demonfire]

"Noooooo! Not a covenant, the Covenant! An army of Aliens that try to take over Earth in the game, Halo!" Brandon said, shaking his hands in front of him in a 'Not that!' gesture. "It's a video game! A Video game!" Brandon yelled to Greg.

"There was no insult anywhere! NO INSULT!" Brandon continued screaming as he began to chase down Greg, taking him as fast as his skinny legs could take him--not that fast.

"It's a Video Game? You were talking about a fancy little rich boy video game? Hell, I should give you a black eye right now for saying something so dumb!" Greg said, suddenly turning, and acting as a wall for the small boy to crash into.

Suddenly though, Gregario Seafarer knew what he was doing was wrong, and that he was being very insensitive, and waited a moment to let himself cool down. "Listen kid, I'm real sorry, have you eaten yet?" he said, starting his way back to the crystal lake. "I have some food, and I'll share it with you and... What's his name?"

Brandon ducked down as he heard Greg threaten him with a black eye, putting his hands behind his head as if commanded by a police officer. "No black eye, sir!" Brandon said as if were being scolded by a parent.

The sudden change in Gregario's behavior seemed to have a profound effect on Brandon. He went from a scared and fearful mood to a joyous one; the one that usually accompanied him for most of his days. "I had a ham sandwich earlier. You can save your food for yourself! And that is Box!" Brandon said, pointing at the small Box Goblin.

Greg smiled, and felt very happy that he had just made a new friend. "Well, if you get hungry, I brought a few of my families' trademark potato-cakes." He said, pulling out the small hashbrown. He had cooked it in his room, on a small electric frying pan, before he left. With all the taste of hashbrowns with half the grease, these small cakes were one of Gregario's favorite treats away from home. "My mom used to make them all the time... Your mom ever cook for you?"
