Part One
Setting: Outside Jerusalem, 70AD
“So why did you chose to save me anyways?”
Lilith smiled as the two of them walked across the empty field, the night illuminated by the burning city of Jerusalem behind them. Without seeming to move, Brutus saw Lilith’s position change from head up to on his neck. He felt her lips resting on the two marks she had left on his neck, the ones that hadn’t healed following his transformation. “ I saved you because I thought what you did was noble.” She said, after her head had reappeared in its former position. Her smile became humored after looking at his face, “This is something you will become used to in time. Tomorrow night you will be much, much changed.”
“Noble? I defied the Emperor’s son…and was crucified!”
Lilith nodded, “yes, but you did it for your personal beliefs.”
Brutus paused for a second, then nodded.
They continued on, walking in silence, working their way along the winding dirt road, little more than a footpath, to a collection of caves in naked rock hill. They arrived at an old tomb, but one that had been opened up and the corpses removed.
“Why are we here?” Brutus asked with a smile.
“to sleep.” Lilith responded curtly.
Brutus examined the cave with his darting eyes. His body was soon covered in sweat, the last vestige of his human existence coming to the show. “Sl-sleep in there?” he asked, his breathing tense, shallow, and rapid.
Lilith’s eyes narrowed, “yes, in there.” She pointed to eastern horizon, painted red with the rising of the sun, “Unless you wish to die before taking your first meal, or exacting revenge on Titus.”
Brutus’ eyes where wide, he shook his head very slightly, “um…couldn’t we sleep in a barn…or maybe under a tree?”
Lilith then shook her own head, “no, we’re dead, so we sleep in tombs.”
“Couldn’t we do what my people do to the dead?”
“And what would that be?” Lilith knew the answer generally, but hopefully, he knew of a more obscure Roman ritual.
“Well we burn them. I burned my-”
Lilith cut him off with a lunge that grabbed his throat. She imagined herself crushing it, and then extracting his heart before throwing him back into the fires of the Temple. I’ll burn you…see if you come back little boy. She thought.
She sighed, an anachronism from her life as a human millennia before, then gently placed Brutus on the ground before releasing her grip. As Brutus fell to the ground, she said, “It won’t work, trust me.”
Regaining his composer, he stood up, “How do you know?”
She snorted and gave a rouge smile, “Because darling, that’s what we do when we kill a vampire, we burn them. That or leave them in the sun…” her gaze shifted to the sun. The red pastel sky was turning increasingly orange. Her face changed from a smile to a look of dread.
“Brutus my darling, the sun will spill over the horizon any minute, and we’ll be dead.” Despite her expression, she said her piece with a calm, seductive voice.
“I’m not getting in that hole…don’t you see how small it is?”
“So, it’s bigger than your tent in the camps, and you’re only sharing it with me.”
“The tent was open…your going to roll that rock in front of it, I know you are!”
“Well yes…don’t want someone coming in and burning us while we’re sleeping.”
“But-”
“But nothing!” Exasperated, Lilith grabbed Brutus and dragged him inside as he kicked and shouted.
“I’m not going in there! I’m going to Suffocate! You Bitch, Let me go!”
“Shut up!” she shouted, “You’re dead, you don’t breath anymore!” I am going to kill him at some point, he’s going to return to that temple that he refused to burn; he is going to burn in it with all its priests!
“The rocks will crush me! I don’t want to die!”
Then why didn’t you torch the temple? She sighed and threw him against the wall and ran across the narrow room in a split second, closing the door before Brutus could recover and find his barring.
