Background:
The Imperium is the largest single human state in history, encompassing over one thousand habitable star systems (systems with stars from G-2 to G-6 with rocky bodies within the green zone) and an uncounted number of uninhabitable systems. The military of the Imperium is minimal, barely keeping order among the Imperial throne, frontier nobles seeking autonomy, and rampant piracy. This is a convincing illusion as their sense of racial sovereignty is strong and when invaded, the desperate factions unite readily to defend the status quo.
Capital City lies on a group of artificial islands in the North Atlantic on Terra in the Sol System. The Emperor, the Leader of Imperium, resides in the city. Though technically the absolute ruler, his power is limited by a de factor parliament of nobles. The Emperor does not need to heed the parliament, but it is in his best interest to because they have sway over a significant portion of the officer corps, which is also composed mostly of the nobility.
History:
Most races regard Humanity as far too young with respect to space faring technology. Legend says that the Human race discovered the technology during an expedition to another world via sub light, non-hyperspace travel. Because of the discovery of Hyperspace technology on its surface, it is referred to as Hyperia. Humanity’s pioneering spirit and rapid breeding lead to swift expansion, but an expansion that left human communities widely spread.
After their expansion, the human race stagnated, focusing on colonization and political stability. Approximately five hundred years after the end of the expansion, the Imperium was formally organized. It is unknown how the Imperium was first united, but it is likely that it was through a mixture war and politics.
War is common in the Imperium, their neighbors are very militaristic, especially the Servaeri Union, which seeks to unite with the Imperium and convert the wide ranging religions to the Technolisis religion.
The Imperium Today:
The Imperium future is uncertain. Many pirates, though confident that the last Servaeri war is not yet over, are growing leery of the Imperial throne. There is also evidence of a growing sense of disenchantment among the peasantry. A great many races in the Organization of Galactic States are awaiting a monumental change within the Imperium; they are apprehensive of the fallout.
